Vegliamo noi superstiti pei morti. 109
E voi sabbie, voi venti del deserto
quando incombe la sera
e il mondo guarda al ciel come in attesa,
piegatevi in silenzio,
si riproduca in voi quel rito
dell’ammaina-bandiera,
e con noi per essi fate la preghiera:
Per il tutto dàto
e per il nulla avuto
o Dio onnipotente
splenda per essi una perpetua face.

We survivors shall watch over for the dead.
And you sands, you desert winds
when the evening looms
and the world looks to the sky as if waiting,
bend in silence,
may that rite reproduce in you
of flag furler,
and with us, for them, pray:
For the everything that was given
and for the nothing that was received
God almighty
may a perpetual face shine for them.
